We are looking for an ancestor. We only have his last name, Davies. He was born in 1841 in Mydrim Carmarthenshire Wales and was married to Ann Thomas in 1865. Ann was born in 1844 in the same place as her husband. They had a daughter named Mary Ann Davies born in 1869 in Penwrhiceiber, Glamorganshire, Wales, a son name Edward Davies born in 1867 in Mydrim, Carmarthenshire, Wales and another son named  Thomas Davies born in 1869 in Mydrim, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Hi Paul

You can check for bmd registrations in England and wales at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl. This is a free site as the name implies. Be careful not to click on the link to Ancestry when searching. I think that's at the top of the page - though I don't see it in FireFox

Mydrim is in the Carmarthen registration district. There are lots of Ann Thomas's born there in 1844. If you want Ann Thomas's birth, you will need her marriage certificate to get her father's name. There is no marriage for an Ann Thomas to someone surnamed Davies in Carmarthen in 1865 - so maybe they were married in Penrhiwceiber, or maybe the year is wrong.

Penrhiwceiber is in the Rhondda valley, so therefore is in the Pontypridd registration district.

If you search the index for both those districts, you may find the people you're looking for - but Davies is such a common name that you will get multiple possibilities.

Your best bet is to write to, or email, the registrars of both districts, with as much detail as you can find, to see if they can help. I've found the Carmarthen registrar to be most helpful - she found several members of my family that we didn't know about when my brother and I visited a few years ago.

Best of luck with your research.

The family is here in the 1871 census:

Household Role Gender Age Birthplace
Thomas Thomas   Head M 63 Mydrim, Carmarthenshire
Rachel Thomas   Wife F 58 Penboyr, Carmarthenshire
Anne Davis  Daughter F 26 Mydrim, Carmarthenshire
Esther Thomas   Daughter F 20 Mydrim, Carmarthenshire
Edward Davies   Grandson M 4 Mydrim, Carmarthenshire
Thomas Davies   Grandson M 2 Mydrim, Carmarthenshire
Mary Davies   Granddaughter F 1 Glamorganshire

"England and Wales Census, 1871", database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V553-MBT : accessed 23 May 2016), Anne Davis in entry for Thomas Thomas, 1871

Ironically the father isn't present but is described as a gardener.

Here's Anne's birth/christening record too.

"Wales Births and Baptisms, 1541-1907," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X1YP-F5L : accessed 23 May 2016), Anne Thomas, 12 May 1843; citing , reference ; FHL microfilm 105,217

She was actually born in 1843 although that means the age of 26 in the 1871 census should actually be 27. (This sort of error is very common)
