I wanted to share this family photo of George Clisby with the community.  George Clisby was my great grandfather, who fought at Gettysburg.  He is in the back row, second from the right. Location: unknown. Date: .

Great picture, but do you have a higher resolution (bigger) version of it available? That seems to be the original size. It's hard to see details on such a small size.

Sadly, no.  A cousin of mine discovered the picture during his research and sent it to me.  I was successful in enlarging it enough to frame, but any further enlargement loses all detail.

My Great Great Grandfather was in the 6th Alabama, in the Racoon Roughs CO I I believe.

What a great photo!  You are so fortunate to have such a good quality photo of your Civil War ancestor.  Do you know the identities of the other men in the picture?  Are the others family members, or could this have been a photo taken during a Civil War reunion?

This was definitely a reunion of what was left of the 6th Alabama, Infantry Regiment, Company E, after the Civil War. My grandfather (second from the right in the back row) was with his remaining troops when they were captured by Union soldiers at South Mountain on July 5, 1863, while on their way to Richmond. He was then transferred to Ft. Delaware on July 9, 1863. From there, he was put aboard a ship where a surgeon noticed the infection in his left arm, which had been caused by a medical assistant at Ft. Delaware.  The surgeon told my grandfather that if he didn't completely remove the arm, he would be dead within the next couple of days, and took it off at the shoulder.  This information is in a paper he dictated to his sister after the war, wherein he credits the Union surgeon for saving his life.  He was paroled at Fort McHenry, Maryland, with a Surgeon's Certificate of retirement dated April 3, 1865 at Montgomery, Alabama.

You should definitely add that story to his biography and list as your source that it was information dictated by him to his sister.  What a great resource to have - direct from the person involved.
