This is just a comment. I've been following the discussion on the pre 1700 or post 1700. In general there seems to be a long delay in getting mergers done. Even when the facts are clear. So, much time is wasted waiting for approval from managers who are not regular participants. This past week I did three mergers and have three more waiting for approval. Most of the lines use the source "It's right because it was in my GEDCOM." or "I was there and the profile is from 1700 to 1800." Even the inclusion of a secondary source is an improvement. I would not add any further rules to merging than their are now. We need to enforce the rule that you check for a duplicate before you start a new profile. This is especially true of new comers. Because it is not a rule in any other place in genealogy. This past week I had two lines I added sources to existing profiles rather then starting a new one. This is hard but it is good as it completes our single tree. But, I see so many profiles that have not been checked it seems like every one we merge a new one is created. I thimk we need to streamline the process and complete more merges. . .
