Reusel-de Mierden clean-up?

I think many of the dutch roots project members will be familiar with the bogus location of Reusel-de Mierden.

There still are a lot of profiles on Wikitree with this location.

Any guidelines on what to do when we encounter these?

I'm sure a great majority of these originate from the New Netherland Settlers Project. If it is unclear what the real location is for these profiles, it's safe to replace it with Netherlands.

The other common error is that Holland is not the same thing as the Netherlands and/or that the Netherlands isn't in Holland. https://www.google.com/search?q=wikitree+%22netherlands%2C+holland%22&rlz=1C1ASUM_enUS532US532&oq=wikitree+%22&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i60j69i65l3j69i57.4039j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

I added it to a Common Pitfalls section on our resources page to try to help! http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Netherland_Genealogy_Resources

Thanks for asking, Joke!

Probably a high percentage can not be fixed, simply because no sources for the person can be found in any of the Dutch resources. To have an idea of what kind of profiles have this error you can search for error profiles with this location here.

The strategy I use is to update with the correct location if determinable, else make a comment in the profile signalling the bogus location. On non-open profiles I post a comment.

Googling Reusel-de Mierden in Wikitree results in approx. 600 hits.

Please add the tag "db_errors" to your question and ask for an error code for this location

I can add this town as an error? For Franch town Y they didnt want it. I will check it on monday. I can even make it custom so anyone can define a location expression to be marked as an error.

What shell we call it?
Bogus location from Ancestry
Aleš,

I think a custom business rule for location would be perfect!

With error text "Bogus location" or maybe customizable too?

I did a search for some instances of Reusel-de Mierden and found quite a few. I have corrected some profiles. Many of these profiles are from a single family- the Monis family from Amsterdam.

This error is particularly prevalent in long-ago emigrants from the Netherlands because it was created by descendants who had specific information on a person's origin, so they entered "Holland" in their genealogy software -- and the software autocompleted with Reusel-de Mierden.

Another autocomplete error that affects Dutch profiles is the substitution of "Newfoundland and Labrador" when a user entered location "NL." In many cases, WikiTree entries of "Newfoundland and Labrador" can be corrected to "Netherlands." For example, I'm rather sure that people whose births and deaths occurred in the Netherlands in the 1600s didn't go to Newfoundland and Labrador to get married.
