The Life of John Oldham (1622 - 1698) of Virginia?

Question

John Oldham, born 1622 in England, emigrated to Virginia about 1635. He died in Northumberland County, Virginia, in 1698. He married, but how many times?. Wikitree shows 4 wives, and they need to be merged so we can merge children down the line.

Can anyone help sort out John, his wives, his children, their wives, etc?  We really need a project just for the Oldham family in Virginia!

Stanley Jo oldham is my father and I am the only daughter left that I know of but he didn't sign my both certificate I can obtain death certificate.  Grand mother is betty Lou maruihead Jackson

If he came to Virginia about 1635, it's very possible he is listed in:  Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5 by John Frederick Dorman, FASG, editor.  Fourth edition edition. 3 volumes. Baltimore, Maryland: Genealogical Publishing Co, Inc., 2005. A friend got it as an interlibrary loan.  It is a fabulous resource for not only the Jamestown settlers but also the next 4-5 generations.

I believe also that I have seen Oldham in my family tree here recently.

the sources and notes on the profile seem to support the points that you mention, but further explain motivations, family and strugles in later life.

I believe this is your John Oldham. There are 4 and 1/2 pages which you should love to see. I will upload the the first pageand you let me know if you want them all.  One page shows ten of Thomas'children (brother of John).

Kathryn, the page you posted is most helpful, and gives more information about the John Oldham to came to New England on the ship, what was it, Elizabeth and Anne.  Do you have the rest of the book?  For a good source citation I'd want the name of the book's author, the full title of the book, the publisher, place it was published and the year.  That's all usually on the book's title page.

A quick glance at this profile and other resources on the internet suggests that this man really needs major research going back to as many original sources as possible.

I say this because it looks like there is material about a John Oldham who went to New England mixed up with material about a John Oldham who went to Virginia.  The ship that supposedly took him from England was destined for New England, not Virginia.  

Until we really know who he was, and really know who his wife was, and how many wives he had, and which was the mother of which children, merges are premature and can simply create problems that then have to be resolved in the future!

I try to restrict myself to colonial Maryland figures and leave Virginia to others, or else I'd plunge in!

Couldn't resist.  Re-arranged profile into three biographies, one for the John Oldham born in Derby, England, one for the John Oldham of New England, and one for the John Oldham of Virginia.  One problem is that you have fathers, sons and nephews all named John.  But at least this way one can start collecting information and putting it on chronological order and see how many John Oldhams one ends up with.

As you can see now, having added some information, it's more clear that there's more than one individual.  I think the New England version of John goes with the parents who are shown.  I haven't gotten any more information or insight about the wives yet.
