Why did Eli Thomas Pouncey and wife Mahulda Merchant name their son John Blackstone Pouncey in 1832?

Eli Thomas Pouncey and his wife, Mahulda Merchant, both were born 1813 in Georgia (I believe). In 1832, in Alabama, they named their second-born child John Blackstone Pouncey. I have no idea why the Blackstone name was chosen, but I suspect that it came from Mahulda's extended family, of which I know nothing.

It seems you've answered your own question.  I think you are right, you'll 'possibly' find the name somewhere in the extended family.

In some cases of my own family - I was perplexed by some middle names.  Eventually they came to light, A 3 x great grandmother's surname was used for one.

I'm doing a One Name Study - one name stood out Ann Leckie Merrilees.  She was named after her aunt Ann Merrilees who married a Leckie therefore Ann Leckie (maiden name Merrilees).

1813 is quite early they may have carried on traditions from their native country or traditions from their own family.

I discovered that Mahunda Merchant Pouncey's relative, W. Blackstone Merchant, was the administrator of her husband's estate.--source: Estate expenditure report, 1857. Thus the question is answered.
