Mary Howard died Oodla Wirra, South Australia 1904 [closed]

Looking for maiden name, and any other information, for Mary Howard who died at or near Oodla Wirra in South Australia. She is listed on a plaque in the Cemetery as being 82 when she died on 27 September 1904. She was the wife of John Howard, who died before 1904. She may have been the mother of [[Howard-11145| Margaret Mary O'Connell (nee Howard)]] who was living in the area at the time. I want to add her profile and link it to the Oodla Wirra Cemetery page.

TROVE has several entries - but don't list her maiden name.

Thanks Vivian,

Looks like she was born near Ennis, County Clare, Ireland about 1821; married in Ireland and travelled to SA on the Prince Regent. The obituary says they arrived in SA about 1853; the Prince Regent arrived in 1852 (no Howards on passenger list) and 1854 (unable to find passenger list). John died in 1876, buried in Marrabel but no death record. They had at least 8 children, presumably some at least were born in SA however I can't find any birth records. Apparently it is not unusual for Catholics not to register births or deaths in South Australia during this period. They lived at Gumeracha, Light (near Kapunda) and Tothills Creek before moving to Oodla Wirra.

Can anyone else help with her maiden name?

On I found marriage entries for 2 of her daughters, named in the obituary:

1890 Bridget M. HOWARD & William P. CARROLL

1894 Catherine HOWARD & Michael FOGARTY.

The marriage certificate should list their mother's maiden name, but not sure if you want to go to that way.

Thanks Vivian,

Unfortunately South Australian marriage certificates from this time period do not include mothers maiden names.

Found her - unfortunately after I had created an unknown profile, so I have requested a merge. Thanks Rhys Fogarty for creating [[Cronin-590|Mary Howard nee Cronin]].
