looking for the dad of William Pink Brannon

+9 votes
My Great x2 Grandpa, William Pink "Pete" Brannon born 3 Nov 1860 died 17 Feb 1935. Born in the state of Mississippi and died in the state of Mississippi as well. Looking at a 1910 and 1930 Census it states that the parent of William Pink "Pete" Brannon were born in Mississippi.

Thank you,

So a possibility - Census takers did occasionally gloss over some details, so where parent's birth states are concerned, if they just do a "you're from Mississippi, so your parents must be from there too" thing, it doesn't surprise me. With that being a possibility, here's one with parents from Alabama and Georgia:

"United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M6G8-93Z : accessed 6 June 2016), William Branens in entry for Henry Branens, 1860.

Another less likely (middle initial won't work), with parents from Alabama and Tennessee:

"United States Census, 1860", database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M8W3-4YN : accessed 6 June 2016), Wm J Brannon in entry for E M Brannon, 1860.

And another (initials still don't match) with parents from Mississippi and Alabama:

"United States Census, 1870," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFSR-ZJG : accessed 6 June 2016), W L Brannan in household of C E Brannan, Mississippi, United States; citing p. 10, family 63, NARA microfilm publication M593 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 552,247.

There seem to be no shortage of candidates if you throw out the fact that the parents are supposed to be both from Mississippi, but I haven't found one yet that clearly lines up.

And here's a few records that appear to be clearly him:

"Find A Grave Index," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVVK-JNJZ : accessed 6 June 2016), William Pink Brannon, 1935; Burial, Lucedale, George, Mississippi, United States of America, Macedonia Cemetery; citing record ID 17051578, Find a Grave, http://www.findagrave.com.

"United States Census, 1930", database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:3V7D-H6Z : accessed 6 June 2016), Pink Brannon in entry for Charles Brannon, 1930.

* "United States Census, 1910," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MP8D-9FQ : accessed 6 June 2016), Pink Brannan, Beat 1, Greene, Mississippi, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) ED 19, sheet 15B, NARA microfilm publication T624 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,374,753.
