Hi Connectors!

Our June Connection Combat is coming up soon. Who would you like to see be a part of it?  Post your suggestions below.

Thanks!

Joe DiMaggio. Although not contemporary, the baseball star was married to   Marilyn Monroe who of course was also married to the playwright Henry Miller. And summer does smack of baseball as well as outdoor plays…and maybe motor movies.

Joe DiMaggio is already connected.

A day late, a dollar short…shoulda thought of Joe a while ago i guess!

Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.

Nice, I was thinking about Ali!
Looks like Scott beat us to the punch there--he's already connected as of a couple days ago : )
Oops - sorry about that. If we want a boxing theme, maybe if Sonny Liston isn't on there, we can do an "opponents of Ali" theme.
Sonny might be a tough one, but I'm willing to give it a go if others are. Some choices (along with Liston and Foreman) are:

Sonny Liston

George Foreman

Ernie Terrell

Joe Frazier

Leon Spinks
Henry Cooper.

Johan Cruijff and Franz Beckenbauer

Muhammad Ali would have been an excellent choice, but someone already connected him. In June there are the European football (soccer) championships. Maybe Johan Cruijff, a legend in this sport who died recently, could face off with his eternal rival Franz Beckenbauer one more time.

Back in March I suggested that Anne Frank (Frank-1225) would be a good candidate some time, and Eowyn said: "Maybe since her birthday is in June we could try her then, perhaps with Elie Wiesel again since we didn't get him connected last time."

Thank you for remembering!
Instead of Elie Wiesel, http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Santrouschitz-1 ,Miep Gies might be an option.
Miep Gies is not nearly as well-known as Anne Frank, but her connection to the Frank family's story would create a wonderful counterpoint to Anne.

Well Johnny Depp, Blake Shelton, Mike Tyson and Anne Frank all have birthdays this month.

I wonder if we could have less emphasis on sports and entertainment figures and more on historically interesting people, such as writers, inventors, statesmen, and war heroes.  Anne Frank was an interesting thought.  We just had the anniversary of DDay.  What about President Eisenhower or Winston Churchill?
by Carolyn Adams G2G6 Mach 9 (92.3k points)
Sir Winston is already connected (Churchill-4). And President DDE is also connected (Eisenhower-1). I'm not opposed to selecting an historic figure, but we'll have to do a bit of hunting to find a non-connected one.
If you could make a case for this guy, maybe he'd be worth trying to connect:

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Knight-6571

He's got a movie opening in June (Free State of Jones) and I think his profile is in decent shape except for the missing connection.
In keeping with the D-Day theme - there are a couple of WWII officers that are unconnected - General Carl Spaatz - Spaatz-1 - who served in both WWI and WWII and Adm. Chester Nimitz - Nimitz-5 - Commander in Chief of the Pacific forces.  Or perhaps one of them and Knight-6571.
While you have a point about entertainment figures, I don't think there have been (m)any connection battles between sportsmen.

That being said, there haven't been many connection battles between historical figures either, so that's always an option.

Personally I would like it if someone would be picked that is from a country that isn't the US or UK.
The Notables list has a few that might work for this:

Douglas Robert Stewart Bader - RAF Pilot in WW II

Glyndwr Michael - Wales homeless man whose body was used in Operation Mincemeat in WW II

Nadezhda Popopva - Russian female pilot (Night Witch) from WW II (profile Popova-4)

Irena Sendler - Polish nurse in WW II (profile Krzyżanowska-3)

Andrée Virot - French resistance fighter from WW II (profile Virot-1)

Alex Viraciu - US Navy flying ace during WW II (profile Vraciu-1)

Nicholas Winton - British "Schindler" who organized the rescue of 669 children from Czechoslovakia (profile Wertheim-9)

Maj Gen Orde Wingate - Senior British Army Officer during WW II (Wingate-335)

Victor McLaglen - WW II Veteran and Academy Award Winner

Willem Arondeus - Dutch WW II hero (Arondeus-1)

Several non US/UK choices in there if you like.
I just read about Glyndwr Michael, the man who never was.  I think it would be very appropriate to connect him to the tree.  A man who died, homeless, without family, friendless, and after death became an officer and helped win the war.   This has my vote.  Cymry am byth.
Nimitz-5 was such a kind soul in his old age. Saw him several times shopping at a grocery store in North Berkeley. He always had a smile for those who recognized him particularly children. Usually wore bermuda shorts and looked very much like everyone's dignified grandfather.

I didn't realize he wasn't connected - nice choice too.
I could be reading it wrong, but I'm seeing the trail end at Meuller-24, whom I suspect should have her last name standardized. i adopted a profile just now as I journeyed down the path…have eough German Muellers in my watch list to justify the acquisition!

Someone said below it would be good to have a sportsman or sportswoman in view of the Euros, or the Olympics, coming up.  Maybe we do an Olympics theme in August and cover sport then?

As for June, Anne Frank is a great choice

There are many many Olympic athletes who could be selected using this theme. You may have a good point for us to do a bit of planning for this type of theme.

This is the month of graduations. How about an educator like Maria Montessori? Pit her against the lady who educated Helen Keller.

Or Rudolf Steiner, founder of Waldorf education...
