Are you involved in a genealogical society?

WikiTree is an online forum for genealogy collaboration.

Genealogy societies are the traditional "IRL" (in real life) forums for genealogical collaboration. It's a natural fit. So, a group of us are putting together a plan for doing more to connect with genealogical societies.

Are you involved with one? Which one? Would you want to help with this? Please post here.

Thanks!

Is there a list of these societies somewhere? I have been able to find some genealogical society publications for free online: Sources-Societies. There are probably many more. They are a great source of information.

Yes Eowyn:  I am Secretary to our Summers County Historical Society in Summers County West Virginia.  We have been involved with many genealogy studies in Summers County and we have published printed books about Summers County Cemeteries, Summers County Schools Updated biographies of Summers County Families and published a hardback book in 1985 with essays from people.  Our Family has been here since the late 1600's when our county was not formed and still part of Virginia.  Wiki Tree to me is so beneficial to our family heritage as well to others who participate doing their family trees as well helping others with theirs.  I appreciate this site tremendously as well all the good works that you have done for me and others.  Thank You so much for your precious time in helping others.

The South King County Genealogical Society has a project called the Black Heritage of Franklin https://skcgs.groups.io/g/Black-Heritage-Franklin which we are hoping to cooperate with the US Black Heritage project here on Wikitree, so having a way to list these groups would be so useful to each of these societies - and maybe to users of Wikitree.

I'm webmaster for the Family and Community History Research Society http://www.fachrs.com/.

We do have a lot of family history researchers as members although that isn't our main aim.

"The aims of the Society are to promote and communicate research in family and community history, with a particular emphasis on the contribution of locally based micro-studies, especially through collaborative research."

May be of no interest but you might like to have a look, Eowyn.

Great idea, Eowyn!  I am a member of the Fairfax Genealogical Society in Virginia, USA.  We have a very active society that sponsors an annual two-day conference attended by a few hundred people.

I also will be attending the Genealogical Research Institute at Pittsburgh in July and would be happy to provide information about WikiTree at that event.

I am a member of the Genealogical Society of South Africa   - http://genza.org.za/

There is an online branch - http://www.eggsa.org/ and their facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/virtual.eggsa/

I am also member of the the Western Cape branch whose facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/GGSA-Wes-Kaap-158120864209113/

I now also help out a bit at the Genealogical Institute of South Africa.  They are in Stellenbosch.  Their website is http://www.gisa.org.za/ They have a large library and Family Registers and a lot of Birth, Marriage and Death notices for South Africa as well as old Voters Rolls (available on Microfiche ) and are in the process of digitalising the records. They also have researchers available to assist with researching your family, if you are not able to visit them - from what I understand, this research service is available at a very reasonable fee.  Their resources have been instrumental in helping me overcome quite a few road blocks in my research.

Douglas, does your society cover people who lived in Southwest Africa/Namibia? One branch of my mother's recently discovered birth family is from there.

Hey Fred. I lived in Biddeford , Maine. On Evanthia Dr. In 1980.
Hi, Trudy:  I'm a native Maine-i-ac, but lived "away" for many years (military, school, jobs), returning here to settle in 1993.  Raised in northern Maine (Van Buren), but now settled in southern area.  Fred,
Hey Fred , when I worked at Rich 's department store in Biddiford my supervisor was a man by by the name of Don Parent. Back in 1980. He was a very nice man. The very first day I ended up in Biddiford , we went into a restaurant where they only spoke French.  It was nothing like my four years of French. And being born in Pittsburgh , raised in Flagstaff  ,Arizona the Maine accent was so hard for me to understand. I felt like I was in a foreign country. It was so beautiful. I rode my bike to Kennebunkport and Old Orachard Beach and down to Ellis all the time. For awhile I lived in Portland.  I loved it there. But got home sick for my horses and canyons here in Northern Arizona.

I am the recording secretary of the Boulder Genealogical Society in Colorado, USA. Last month I gave a presentation "Plays Well with Others: Pros and Cons of Collaborative Family Trees" - guess which was my favorite?
by Karen Lowe G2G6 Pilot (191k points)
I wish I could see that presentation, Karen. I don't suppose it was videotaped? Do you have slides? That reminds me, Paul Bech and others have worked on collecting a set of resources for WikiTreers doing presentations, e.g. if you did slides and would be willing to share them we could link them from some central location. Then if someone else is doing a presentation they might be able to build on what you did.

I am a member of the Cory Family Society; http://www.coryfamsoc.com/ The focus is the three lines of Cory descendants from early 1600's Rhode Island/ Long Island/Mass and latter Irish Cory's. There is a DNA project on FT DNA which proved that the three Cory "brothers" were actually unrelated. All three early lines have Revolutionary and Civil war veterans.
