It looks like we need to undo a merge

While working on trying to reconnect a GEDCOM which got disconnected somehow, I came across a profile which shows as being connected to the main tree (and I got all excited, because I'm working on the Connectors Challenge too), but it turns out that there was a merge between two people with the same name. (Barron-974 was christened in Cornwall, and Barron-1370 was born in Maryland, which would have been quite a trick if they were actually the same person).

So I tried to undo the merge, only to get an error message that it couldn't be done, and that I needed to copy all the data for one of the profiles into yet another new profile. There was also a message saying that a tool to make that easier is on the way. What's the status of that?

I've done some hunting on G2G for similar issues and even through March of this year, it appears that there is no way to completely reverse a merge. Most answers point directly to creating a new profile manually.

Greg,

There are several of us that have expertise in this issue...we had some vandals years ago and we ended up with a lot of bad merges.   So, if you want help separating the two and creating the new profile....let me know.

Thanks, Robin.

I wouldn't mind help in separating the profiles, but my real question is about the status of the automated tool to do that. If it's imminent, then I can wait to  do the fix. If it's going to be ready "someday", then I might as well do the job manually.

Greg, Can you cut and paste the URL for the discussion you are referring to?   Where someone said there was a tool, or a tool being developed...if I see that I might be able to figure out what was happening at the time and what tool was being discussed.
Robin, it's not a discussion. It's an error message that pops up when I go to the merge and try to undo it. The result I get is at:

I finally decided to try manually recreating a profile based on the original Barron-1370, and I think I may have found a real duplicate at Barron-2101, so I aborted creating yet another profile. I sent a private message to the manager of Barron-2101, pointing him to the original data for Barron-1370 to see if it looks like a match to him. (It does to me, but this bad match has messed things up so much that I'm kind of cautious about what I do to "fix" it.)

Somebody has also been trying to "fix" Barron-974, only by taking out all the English data (which was the original).
