Finding Profiles to Adopt

+13 votes

I have a question about Orphaned Profiles... I would like to adopt some more, but I don't have a specific surname I am researching. Rather, most of my research is geographically specific - is there any way to re-sort the orphaned list or enable a search by location instead of surname?? Even if it is just by country to start, that would be a huge help.

That's a great suggestion, Christine!  Including a location would be helpful in many WikiTree reports.  The current location fields do not have separate fields for state/province or country, so it may not be possible to do the sorting you suggest.  For example, if someone lists only "PA" in the location field, and someone else lists "Pennsylvania", and a third person lists "Penna., USA", I'm not sure how it would sort.  Add to that complication someone listing "Luzerne, PA", "Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, United States", "Plains, Luzerne, PA, United States of America", or "Pennsylvania, Luzerne County, Plains", and the many other possible variations.  This could be a difficult problem to solve, but I leave that to other experts to decide.

Though we don't have standard location formats yet, I know options to do this are being discussed.

Yes... I thought of that. What about a keyword search? Could we add a search box similar to the surname search box? I have been trying to just use the "Find" function on Safari but that becomes tedious after several pages...
