When a family member dies in hospital, do you post the town of the hospital orhis home town,

John Parker, was listed as place of death as His home town but he died in Hospital in the nearest city Which one should be listed?

Also thanks for the corrections team especially Aleš Trtnik for pointing out the wrong gender.

While the actual place of death is the one you want for for the top part of the profile, you'll also want to put the home address in the biography.  That can be obtained for recent deaths from the SSDI or death certificate or obituary.  You might also want to mention any rest home or similar.  These additional places can be important when looking for obscure information for someone.  Likewise the funeral home  can be a good source for information about kin and possible heirs.

I agree - where they died is what they note on the death certificate and any death records. And typically those records are what is noted on funeral records as well. Residence information can be very misleading, as it's difficult to say how long they were away if they had a long illness, long hospitalization, or were in a nursing home for an extended stay.

I use residence if known.  I don't (normally) care which hospital someone was in.

Ah but if someone is subsequently looking for a death certificate, they won't find it at the residence town, unless the hospital was there also. Of my parents and parents in law only one of them died in the town they lived in. The other three died in another town nearby, where the hospital/nursing home was.

I agree with Anne B, My mother died in a neighboring county and that is where her death record lists as the place of death so if you wanted to find her death records the home address would be  worthless.

In the Death Location field, you should list the actual place of death, not place of residence.  I would list the town where the hospital is located, but not the hospital name, and list town, county, state, country.  In the biography, I would list the name of the hospital so you have complete information.

I do not list the town where he was living, because that could be very different.  I've had relatives who died while on vacation or visiting someone in another state - listing their hometown would throw me off the trail of locating a death certificate.  Also, most of my relatives were from small villages and had to go to hospitals in another town, and the nearest hospital might be only a few miles away, but in another county.
