If you can find your ancestor in the 1850/1860 US census, you can look for a slave schedule. The schedule will give the owners land and list all his/her slaves. Wills and probate are another source for identifying slave owners. Slaves were valuable 'property' and were willed to heirs.
If your family owned farming land in the South, there is a good chance they owned slaves.

Hello Joseph

Without knowing more about your family, grandparents, other family members - it would be impossible for us to ascertain any information.  The fact you've stated slaves I am presuming your ancestors live/lived in the United States, which state - I have no idea.
