Finding information about Native American ancestors

+7 votes
My g-aunt, Delula Harris, Harris-8957, married Theodore Avant, Avant-5.  They married in Oklahoma.  Bokchito, Oklahoma.  The story goes that she, Delula, ran off with an "Indian" from the reservation.  Theodore being that person.  I cannot find a marriage certificate anywhere online.  IF, he was Native American, would it be archived with a particular tribe?  And how can I find him on rolls, is there a particular place to check?  I want to make sure that the Theodore Avant that I have, is the correct Avant.  Seeing lots of differences on census' and such.  Different birth states, yet same children (second wife, which, if he was married again would have been illegal as his first wife, Delula, didn't die until the 1920's and I find him married to "Lydia" in 1918.)  Delula's death certificate clearly states she is married.  Even if institutionalized.   Ok, are you as confused as me now?  :)  Good, cuz I really hate being alone in that aspect.  Heheh

Nice to be here too, haven't been much lately due to ill health.  I have been feeling pretty good lately.  :)

Are you talking about the Dawes Rolls? A prerequisite for being on these is to be on the 1900 census and living in Indian Territory. Not all people of Native American ancestry living in Indian Territory are on the Dawes Rolls.

You won't find an online marriage certificate for Oklahoma. The state is very backward & I live there.

The Tulsa Library has a good information page at

If you have any questions email or call the Genealogy Center there and they will do their best to help you.

Yes, the Dawes rolls.  Sorry could not remember the name of the rolls for the life of me.  I haven't found many marriage certs for OK AT ALL.  Not online anyway.  They were married in what I THINK was Indian Territory.  Trying to check that now.  Bokchito, OK. He was Choctaw, from the reservation, but I am still trying to find out if Bokchito was part of a reservation.  Thanks for the Tulsa Library link, I appreciate it.

Ohhhh...I just thought of something.  My cousin married a Native American from OK that lived on the reservation, she also lived there.  I am gonna see if I can ask him.  (They are no longer married so I have to be careful about that.)  :)  He would surely have an idea tho.  Thanks so much!
