There were two Hatfields shown at Moundsville State Prison, Moundsville, Marshall, West Virginia, on the 1940 US Census. No outside occupation is given:

  • Paul Hatfeld, 24 years old, divorced, b. Virginia. in 1935 he lived in Williamson, Mingo, WV.
  • Crawley Hatfield, 23, married, b. West Virginia. In 1935, he lived in Logan County, WV.

Some time, probably before 1980, a Crawley Hatfield was convicted of murder.(State v. Hatfield, 286 S.E.2d 402 (1982) Nos. 14904, 14905. Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. State v. Hatfield)
