Long list of sources is totally unusable as no relations to genealogical facts in the narrative are recorded
Jan, While the use of inline sources would improve the linking of facts to sources I have found that sometimes it can cause people to remove the sources without understanding what they are doing. The sources in this profile are all listed according to one of the recommended ways to do them and can be checked  so this profile still deserves praise.
Jan, I didn't say it was perfect, but at least someone made an effort!
I agree, Jan. Particularly for a PPP, inline sourcing ought to be mandatory, and for all others, highly encouraged. As written, the profile is nearly unusable for further research purposes.

Dale,

The sources may be listed in one of the (unfortunately) recommended ways, the significance of a considerable number is unclear to me: Elmes 1852, p. 411, Tinniswood 2001, p. 366, etc.

As to inline sourcing, there are multiple arguments against that method of citing sources:

  • In edit mode the narrative gets drowned in all <ref>Another inline source citation</ref>
  • Sourcing should be the first step. This is easiest done by populating the source section with named source citations like <ref name=eventname>Event source citation </ref>, and referring to them when writing the narrative as <ref name=eventname/>
  • Sigificantly reduces the chance of source citations being removed while editing the narrative. At most the reference can be removed.
  • Multiple references to the same source are easier when adding the second reference

I find it most disappointing that this way of doing source citations is not one of the recommended methods.

Jan, this is something beyond my ability to do something about. We have source and stye guides that have been around for a while and this profile does meet the minimum guidelines. There was a big discussion not too long ago about alternate sourcing and the end result was to say that anything not in the style guide should be discouraged  and not used on any Project Protected profiles. That being said, I do not agree with all of the style guide decisions but I do try and follow them. Also I have no problem understanding and using the sources as they are written in the profile above.

It is VERY nice.  I am printing it out for myself, examples.  I am TERRIBLE at this portion of entering profiles.  Thanks for pointing it out! :)

Very nice profile...in-line sources just make it easier to get to the source of the info in the profile. It is definitely a usable profile even without in-line sourcing.

Nice profile that completely missed the fact that he was a member of Parliament.
