Can software check for silly errors (which I have seen), such as people with mothers aged over 100 at their birth.

Welcome to WikiTree.

There is an error report now available (run once a week overnight on either Sunday or Monday) which should give you this information. In the pull-down menu in the top right under the profiles ID you'll find "Error Report". That should have what you're looking for.
