Please look at the original article about our family genealogy in the Hawaiian language newspaper. It was called the Kanehoa Hoapili lineage, not the Kanehoa lineage, nor the Hoapili lineage. Please also look at contemporary news articles to John Green Hoapili, his sons and grandsons. Everyone recognized them as the lineal descendants of Kamanawa, the kahili bearer. Kamanawa was closely related to Ulumeheihei Hoapili - his uncle, but technically even more closely related than that. http://hawaiiankingdom.org/pdf/Aug_17_1896.pdf
John Green Hoapili Kanehoa are not lineal descendants of Kamanawa. There are 3 distinct but different bloodlines with Hoapili. Ulumaheihei Hoapili of Kameiaumoku lineage, Robert Baker Hoapili of Liloa lineage, and John Green Hoapili of Kaneoneo  and Kalanikauiokikilo lineage. Perhaps they pay tribute to its meaning Hoapili (My close friend),or maybe for being one of the first Christian converts.
