Location unknown

+17 votes
The activities feed I receive has dozens of profiles to check every day, but I find it frustrating when so often the birth and death and marriage are noted as "location unknown". It would be helpful at least to know a country, or even a continent, and this would save searching dozens of profiles that take me no-where. Is it against wikitree policy for profile managers to make a reasonable guess at a country, with the proviso that they do not mark it as definite?

Sorry. I did not realise this question had been raised in 2012.

So now the question is, how can we encourage people to add a likely country of birth, even if they do not know the exact location?
Hopefully, your post will remind/clue in some people.

If you have a best guess add it and mark it uncertain. Add a Research Note section telling you have done a best guess...  based on... no sources available...

Example of a creating a Research Notes section and get a timestamp when you added the comment (using ~~~~)

== Research Note ==
'''~~~~''' Added location xxxx as a best guess based on parents location. :::Please update location if you have better evidences for other facts and don't forget also adding the sources to the profile. Thanks for helping
