New match finder is a pain.

New match finder is a pain.  When entering new people to Wiki the match finder used to work very good, I did not mind looking at the potential matches to see if the person was already added.  HOWEVER the new match system pops up with 10-20-30-40 -100 matches.  NOT USEFUL, I find my self putting in a fake death date just to whittle it down the list to a manageable form.

Please go back or use a more stringent soundex lookup.

Thank You

Doug, I assume you mean FindMatches? http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Special:FindMatches

If so, are you aware of the options to adjust its matching?

No I mean when entering new profiles where it says STOP do not proceed until you check matches, then have to check all the boxes to move on.  I enter 1000's per month by hand (don't like the GEDCOM process). It did a good job of finding people already entered and prevented duplicates.  Now I get so many that are not even close ie: Skaggs for Sparks.   If there is a way to tune the search please tell me.

Thanks
Oh, of course, sorry.

Thanks for all your great, well-sourced contributions.

There's no way to personally adjust the automatic matches when creating new people. We need to change them for everyone.

In case you missed this: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/260242/have-seen-that-searching-matching-includes-surname-variants

One thing you may not realize: you don't need to check off each suggested match. Only the ones that appear to be possibilities. The others you can just "tune out" mentally, if you can.
Thanks did not realize they could be ignored..
Hmm... As indicated, implausible matches can be ignored during manual profile creation. However, they cannot be ignored during a gedcom upload (at least I couldn't find a way to ignore them in the small number of gedcom uploads I've done). This already results in creation of too many Rejected Matches between people who don't look remotely similar, but happen to have common names.

Is there any way to avoid having to create excess Rejected Matches during Gedcom uploads?
We did fine-tune the GEDCOMpare settings so it only considers variant surnames on pre-1800 profiles. That should help, but we'll have to wait and see.
