Whitley's in Oklahoma

+9 votes
I am trying to find the parents of Jewell Houston Whitley, who died in 1980. My father in law thinks his grandpa's name was Gabel Barney Whitley, and I can find one record on him, but nothing beyond that.  We are looking for the line of Whitley's that came from Kentucky, and ended up here in Oklahoma.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Terri,

Most. if not al,l my side of the Whitley's run thru Al, Georgia, the Carolina's, Va and Md. I am aware of William Whitley 1831-1866 from Kentucky. Maybe thru him you can track. Also fund a Raymond Whitley son of Barney Whitley that was in Indiana. Good luck, Whitley's seem to have a knack of appearing from no where and returning there.

Thanks Sanders.  I did find Jewell's father and mother, Gabel Barney, and Katie Whitley.  Found them in Lamar County, Texas, of all places! This particular line of Whitley's claim to have had a chair factory in Kentucky, and it does seem that's where Gabel was born.  It is like pulling teeth, trying to find these people!
I am no further than Gable, because those living barely remembered that name, let alone anything further back.  I would like to get back at least as far as their home country. For the record, though, Gabel and Katie had 3 boys that I've found. William, Johnnie, and Jewell Houston "Jude". Jewell ended up in Garfield county, Enid, Oklahoma.. He had several boys. Those who have passed are Ray, and Robert. There are 6 boys from Jewell and Sylvia Smith.
Tracking some pretty strange knots myself. Good hunting and keep the faith!

You might try searching for Wheatley - I have seen these two names -

Whitley and Wheatley used interchangeably.    There is a Gabriel

Wheatley in Hardin County, Kentucky.

Thanks Linda, I'll go look at that now.
Thanks Linda. I added them to my tree but I hate not knowing for sure.
The whole Gable part is throwing me off, because I haven't found that in ant of the records. G.B., but nothing written out. I've also discovered that.in at least 2 different  family members, they are aka Whitlock. How you get Whitlock from Whitley I'll never know. And these are recent living people.
Giving myself a headache. Lol
To find any relatives that have passed, go to find a grave, put in the last name Whitley, or Whiteley or Wheatley, and then clink on United States, and then Kentucky, and then all counties, you can do that with all states too, but it may be too much but take kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina etc. if that is where your relatives lived, even Texas. All of the Whitley in that state will come up. From A to Z. I do that with my ancestors, Smith, packwood's or Wilson's, Baker's You can put any name in Find a grave and click on all counties and you will be able to find if they died in that state or another state. If I can be of help, just let me know. I will help any way I can. My email is nst1953turney2013@gmail.com  Nancy
