will I ever trace the unknown grandfather from Colchester, Essex?

my grandmother gave my late mother the middle name of Burgess but did not name the father of the child - my late mother took the secret to the grave, she sometimes made out that she knew who her father really was but would never disclose the information - sadly no one alive to be able to tell me who my maternal grandfather was!

What is your grandmother's first name? Do you have the location where she died and is buried? It's possible that the father of the child could be buried in the same cemetery.
Well give us something to work on .... what are your mother's and grandmother's full names, locations, and dates of birth?

You could get a DNA test done (I recommend 23andme but there are others) and upload the result to gedmatch to try and find cousins.

Sadly, there is no evidence to be able to assist you in giving a name.

From your family tree this record is the only definitive evidence of your mother's birth :

Surname  First name(s)  Mother  District  Vol  Page

Births Sep 1932   (>99%)
