How can two profiles be both Pending Merges & Unmerged Matches?

Condict-58 and Condict-4 appear in both the Pending Merges and the Unmerged Matches lists on their respective profiles.  Why do they appear in both?  

I clicked on the Merge button on the list of Pending Merges for one of these.  It then told me "Peter Condict (Condict-58) and Peter Condict (Condict-4) are currently set as Unmerged Matches to indicate that the two profiles are not ready to be merged yet.

I deleted the unmerged matches for those two records some time ago and set them as pending merges. They have now been merged. There is still work to be done on the biography.
