Smy Family Tree - Orford Suffolk

Hi. I am trying to find out some information regarding my great grandmother, Ruth Smy. Born Orford, Suffolk around 1883. She had my grandfather Harry Smy in 1906 and they were noted on the 1910 census as being in Woodmarket work house. After this, Ruth married Harry Godden around 1915, I am not sure what happened to her. Any help on the Smy family tree from Suffolk would be great. Thanks. Laura

Do you have Ruth's maiden name? Do you know Ruth's first husband's first name?

A 1910 census doesn't sound like it was in the UK. UK censuses are 1901, 1911, 1921 and so on. Was the census in America or Canada?

Hi Sorry for confusion - new to all this. The census was indeed 1911 that shows Ruth and her son Harry in Woodmarket, Suffolk work house. Ruth's maiden name is Smy, she later married Harry Godden around 1915. Her son (my grandfather) also named Harry (Smy) was born out of wedlock 1906, this may have been why they ended up in the work house? Ruths mother maiden name is Mann, father is John Smy. I think she may have had a brother named Horrace. Thanks for any help Laura

You had me puzzled with Woodmarket. It was actually the Plomesgate Union Workhouse in Wickham Market:

See: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Plomesgate/

and:

  • Suffolk Record Office, Gatacre Road, Ipswich IP1 2LQ. Holdings include: Guardians' minute books (1837-1930); Births and deaths (1914-36); Creed register (1926-36); Inmates' property register (1920-35); etc.

The Smy Godden marriage is registered 1st quarter 1915. There is a daughter Grace V registered 1918 in Plomesgate, mother's maiden name Say, which may well be a mistranscription. She died 1919 in infancy.

From places and dates it looks as though Harry Godden had a first wife Lily who died 1912. He died 1926 and Ruth died 1946.
