I realise that this query is three years old but Philip Drury was my husband's step-grandfather.
Philip married a widow Edith Nora Morgan at Seaford parish church, Seaford, Sussex in May 1918, her husband Edward Morgan was killed in action in 1915. However, that marriage, and the marriage to Philip, were bigamous because her first husband, Joseph Orme was still alive! He died Christmas Eve 1918, a victim of the influenza pandemic. The 1918 certificate names his father as Philip Raymond Drury, a tailor.
Philip had received a shoulder injury and returned to Canada in December 1918 with a party of other medically unfit men and Edith followed him in May 1919. Philip and Edith together with their baby Dorothy are on the 1921 census of Canada living in Kingston. They married again in Kingston in 1930, this time she was Edith Nora Orme, widow.
The 1918 certificate names his father as Philip Raymond Drury, a tailor. The 1930 certificate names his father as Philip Drury and his mother as Lilian Finglestein. If he was unsure of his parentage he may well have invented a father with the same name as himself, but to invent a name like Finglestein....
Philip Raymond Drury's dob from his army record was 27 Nov 1897 which means that he should have been registered Q4 1897 or Q1 1898. From Freebmd and GRO websites there were only two Philip Raymond birth registrations in those quarters. Philip Raymond King was with his parents in 1901 and 1911 so not him, but 3 year old Philip Raymond Finkelstein was living in Cambridge with parents Emanuel Finkelstein age 31, a tailor born Russia/Poland and Elizabeth Finkelstein age 25 born Canterbury, Kent and a 2 year old sister Lilian born London, Holloway.
There are so many coincidences there, I am pretty sure that he was actually born Philip Raymond Finkelstein, but I can't find any obvious reason as to why he ended up with Barnardos or why his name would have been changed to Drury. I belive that Barnardos records are available (at a cost) to direct desendants only.
Philip Raymond Finkelstein (mother Payne) born March Quarter in Canterbury district vol 2a page 847
Emanuel Fingelstein married Elizabeth Jane Payne Q3 1895, Canterbury District vol 2a page 1464
I can't find that Finkelstein family in 1911, but I think it was the same Emanuel Finkelstein who married Clara J Osborn in Faversham district Q3 1910, vol 2a page 2062. Faversham is about ten miles from Canterbury. Emanuel and Clara were together in 1911 living in Prittlewell, Essex.
Do you agree with my thinking?
