How to import a tree from family search

Question

I use an iPad. I have several trees on family search.org

I'm not sure how to import or upload my trees from there to here. I also use mobile family tree. I only have an iPad not desktop.

1. it is better to create profiles manually than import unsourced GEDCOM profiles - quality before quantity
    
2. you have a big family tree we strongly encourage you to import just a piece at a time. See splitting a GEDCOM.

There is only one tree on FamilySearch. You may have several family lines there but they are part of one tree.

I agree with everything Magnus said. And you don't know what other people or FamilySearch itself has added to the profiles you have in their tree.

I have families on FamilySearch and every week I have to check to see what other people have added to profiles I watch. It's not just people either, some of it is by FamilySearch itself.

Absolutely. I agree. There are a lot of mistakes of family search. I have found several mistakes made during indexing. I try to correct these when possible. I also keep an I on my tree to see if any one has made any changes. I try to only add information that has an official record i.e. Birth death marriage naturalization records. I'm very careful about what I add. It can be very tedious. I've been working on 2 grandparents and one great great great grandparent for over 1 year looking for actual birth or baptism records before I put in birth dates. Instead of guessing.

I can't see where FamilySearch supports downloading a GEDCOM from their Family Tree. I had a look in their help pages and Wiki and couldn't see anything about it.

Someone else may know. I suspect you need a computer of some sort to do this, however.

Alma, To my knowledge there is no way to export a GEDCOM from familysearch.org at this time. There has been talk about setting something up on WikiTree that would enable a simple way to create a profile on here using data from a familysearch record but if or when that would happen I have no knowledge.

Not that I'm a big fan of GEDCOM imports (I've been on for over 18 months now and I'm STILL finding issues created by that stupid import... grrr..), but apparently there might be a creative way to get your data into a GEDCOM from Family Search through a third party utility.

They pretty much recommend you purchase a separate app to do this transfer of information:

Good luck but as others have cautioned, just be aware that a GEDCOM won't always transfer everything you think it will, and the more you transfer, the more cleanup you may end up having to do. That being said, try a small sample at first - see if it works the way you like it - and then try a larger group if it ends up working alright for you.

Thank you for your help. I actually did purchase Mobile Family tree 7 for my iPad. I do like that. I just don't know how to import from that to wiki or tribal. Thanks
