Aesthetic Considerations

I like things to look pleasant and be useful

I'm changing the 1640 Hartford Map.

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Andrews-1045 has a small map as background
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lord-10 has the map 1/2 it's original size
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lord-5 has a map colored background
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Birchard-3 has the full size image.

Which would you like to see? In addition does Birchard-3 take a long time to load?

Then Map size. Click the magnifying glass to blow the map up

http://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/0/07/ABGE-77.jpg 1/2 original size

Which do you think works better? Is the large on annoying because it loads slow or it's too large? Is the smaller too small.

The big one loads slower.....I am not a big fan of background pictures.... and making it load slower is not a plus ;-)
I prefer the 1838 version, with the big numbers.  In the new version, the black squares for the houses are all north-south, so they're askew to the plots.  There are quite a few changes, but it's not clear what the justifications are.
RJ the justification is that, the version being used now is copyrighted material and clearly claims to be so and also has errors that were created when it was "cleaned up". I have gotten permission to use the image of the older map from the Conn. Hist. Society. The map is not copyrighted, but the image is.
Actually, RJ, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. 1838 version?
The beige one.

I'm with Magnus. Aesthetically, I dislike all backgrounds. I think they are just visual clutter.

My thoughts as well...
Agree.  Backgrounds add little for me and contribute to pages that load poorly.
