Determine Why a Down Vote was Received

+12 votes

I have 490 up votes and 2 down votes.  I know how and why I got one but a recent one is a mystery.  Is there any way to determine who gave it?  I might then have an understanding as to why.  Without knowing this down votes have no corrective value.

I've had a couple and respectfully, I don't waste my time comtemplating it, I'd rather be doing the genealogy. The same thing goes for discussing whether we should put UK after England etc It's a waste of our time.

I agree with Gillian.  Down votes are completely inconsequential.

I suspect the usual cause of someone casting a negative vote is that the person is a bit acerbic. I've noticed a new member who is a bit that way, but who I think asks good questions.  He has received several no votes, but I hope he takes it as a badge of honor.  I've been getting a bit less than 1% negative votes and accept that as I tend to be a bit sharp tongued myself sometimes.  Still I apologize to anyone I've upset as I don't mean to.

Another possibility, BTW, is that people who have a bit of palsy or bad eyesight might do it by accident.

I think it would be pretty easy to register an accidental vote when I'm reading G2G on my smartphone, since the icons are so small compared with the size of my finger. Also, occasionally my computer operating system decides that I didn't really mean it when I told it never to follow the link where my mouse is hovering -- that change in mouse behavior could lead to accidental votes.

It's my practice never to issue "Down" votes, but I issued one accidentally once. If you have "voted" on a question or answer, you can see a symbol indicating the vote you recorded. When I saw that I had recorded a down vote, I skimmed the discussions I'd looked at recently, but I never did find the discussion where I left a "down" vote.
