When you upload a photo you will see info at the bottom right of the page which gives you options for this:

Use Inside Text

To use this image inside the text of a profile, try pasting this snippet of code into the bio/text section:

{{Image|file=Photos Image Description-.jpg
|caption=
}}

To align it on the right side of the page, in a medium size, with a different caption:

{{Image|file=Photo Image Description-.jpg
|align=r
|size=m
|caption=Here's an image.
}}

Further information on using this can be found at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Image

Doug, how do you insert an image in the text when the image exists on another website?

Hi, Jillaine! Not Doug here. smiley But even the current version of Wikitext, as used on other MediaWiki sites like Wikipedia and the ISOGG Wiki, still disallows embedding images from external sources. The only exception at Wikipedia are images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons...which is really more like cross-pollination than an exception. The "Image" section of Wikipedia's Wikitext main Help page provides some other information, as does the Wikipedia Help page for "Extended image syntax" and the Wikipedia how-to page about "Pictures."

Though for those new to WikiTree I should include a reminder that much of the usage described on those Wikipedia pages does not apply to WikiTree. For WT, once the image is uploaded formatting is limited to our image template parameters. Because it had to be so heavily customized for genealogy, WikiTree runs on a core version of MediaWiki that's 13 years old and that can't, pragmatically speaking, be updated.

So I'm 99% sure that we can't embed external images, as nice a feature as that would be. On that same wish-list I'd add the uploading of other MIME types, like audio and video, which can't be used on WikiTree but are used at other MediaWiki sites, like Wikipedia.
