I am working on my family tree. I have a lot of information through my great-grandmother going back to 1000 A.D. However, I appear to have hit a snag on my great grandfather's side. His father was John Francis Morris (1875-1968) and his father was a man named George Morris. All I know of him is that he passed away or ran off sometime between 1875 and 1880. John's mother's name was Sarah Mears who married a Benjamin Henry Hoyt around 1880 as census records show that by the time 1880 rolled around, John Frances and his sister Mary E. Morris (born around 1867) were step-children to Hoyt. Other family trees I have seen on ancestry list them as his kids but I assume this may be because they were kind of adopted but not officially as their last names weren't changed. If anyone can help with this, I'd be eternally grateful.

Could you say where they lived,  where the 1880 census was taken?
Sorry, John Francis and his sister (Mary E.) lived in Phillips, White County, Illinois with their mother and her husband Benjamin Hoyt at that point.

Here's the 1880 census listing:

"United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MXKY-V7P : 24 December 2015), Sarah M Hoyt in household of Henry Hoyt, Phillips, White, Illinois, United States; citing enumeration district ED 150, sheet 309D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 0258; FHL microfilm 1,254,258.

Dear Jared,

Here is a listing worth investigating, in my opinion:

"United States Census, 1870," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M6W5-PTL : 17 October 2014), George Morris, Illinois, United States; citing p. 39, family 300, NARA microfilm publication M593 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 545,788.

Daughter Mary is the right age,  mother Margaret born in KY cannot read or write [same as Sarah in 1880],  father George as you expected. [Your man John F was not born yet.]

Hope this helps.  -NGP
