There was a male birth in Tetney Parish in 1600,not odd, births give

no name, just male or female, then parent name, father of this one Thomas.

Look see if Tetney borders Middle Rasen Drakes. Not saying this is the one,

but people need to live close enough to meet.

Tetney is about twenty odd miles to the north east of Middle Rasen. It is on the other side of the Lincolnshire Wolds, an escarpment that dominates the local area.

There is no reason why there could not be a family connection, but it is quite a distance with no direct road link. Across country in those days would have been difficult because the fens had not yet been fully drained.

This is the county of Lincolnshire, which in the seventeenth century was the second largest county in England after Yorkshire. Just like Yorkshire it was divided up for administrative purposes.

These places were both in the Parts of Lindsey (the term 'Parts' was the name given to each of the three divisions of Lincolnshire). However, each Part was then also subdivided. Tetley was probably in the East Riding of the Parts of Lindsey, whereas Middle Rasen was either in the West Riding or the South Riding - I cannot remember off the top of my head!

As I say, it is not impossible that they could have met, but not easily unless one had business in the others area - or the family had moved!

Hello Nancy

Are you able to give us any more information? Middle Rasen is a parish not far from my own. Indeed I go there most days when I am at home because my dog likes to walk in the woods there!

I do not recognise Drakers; it is not a locality per se, perhaps it was a house? Is the spelling correct? There are three parishes called Rasen: these are neighbouring parishes and take their name from the River Rasen alongside which these places have grown up.

The oldest parish is Middle Rasen, then the later West Rasen and still later Market Rasen - although this is now the biggest of the three in terms of the size of main settlement and town centre (indeed it is the only town of the three!)

Middle Rasen is a fair sized rural parish with many outlying farmsteads and houses which surrounds Market Rasen on three sides.

Currently I am working in Germany, so not really able to do much to help, but by the end of August I shall be home and happy to help where I can.

The local parish records are held in the Lincolnshire County Archives in the ancient City of Lincoln, which is about fifteen miles away to the south.

If you google that it will give you their email address, and the local archivists may well help you more quickly than I might.

Regards

John Orchard
