my ancestor (William McIntyre) was married in Greenock in 1860. I have the marriage cert but cannot find any family info going further back. His fathers name is given but mother is unknown. any help / hints would be grateful.

Greenock, Scotland, or Greenock, Pennsylvania, or where???

Scott, the best way to start is to make a profile with what you know, including dates or date estimates and places.  You know when and where he was married, his father's name, and I assume, his wife's name and the name of at least one child.  Set up a profile and add the profile number to your question.

If he was married in 1860, he should appear on the 1870 or 1871 census. If in the UK, it will give his birth place.  If in the USA, it will give his birth state.

Hi there Scott: Do you have any info as to his parents by chance? There were many McIntyres from the Argyll area. Mine settled on the Isle of Arran. I do know the museum there does hold a family bible related to them.as the family was a important one on the isle. They farmed the Holy Isle for quite a number of years.
