New direction for relative who changed his name.

I seem to hit a roadblock and I just don't know how to find more about him. I've posted quite a bit of information about him in his profile Kharas-9. I've seen two different dates of birth, one in 1862 (on information about his first marriage) , and one in 1875 (on an image of his death certificate).

He was involved in several court cases. In one of them he told the judge that he was given the name Thomas Hobbs by a family he lived with and when he turned 21 he changed his name to Theodore Kharas. The same article says he taught under the name Hobbs.

This hasn't gotten an answer, so I thought I'd post a comment to it to see if it might get more views and possibly an answer. Are there any ideas for how to proceed with the search?

Also I'm not a member or subscriber of other genealogical search sites -- at least not any for which I would need to pay.
