Nowadays, birth certificates and birth registrations will usually do the trick. In the days before birth certificates and registration, churches that christened or baptized babies might be a primary source. The community where the church was located was usually in the neighborhood of where the child was born.
Family bibles may indicate when a child was born, but may not say where the child was born. Diaries, etc., might be of some help though.
