Check the passenger list for the ship. Veendam, as shown on his naturalization papers.  He may not have come by himself or if there is a mispelling, it will be easier to spot it there.

Bach doesn't look to me as if it was changed, perfectly German as in Johann Sebastian...

There is no first or middle name on papers??? There is no paper trail before his arrival is all.

Bernard in German would be Bernhard. But without any other localizing knowledge looking for him in Germany would be like looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack.
