Are there any "Mayo" here with connections to Spain and the Philippines?

My husband's father, Matias Mayo, was born in the Philippines, left when he was a teenager to work in the C&H sugar industry. He was the only son, married a woman whose family was long established in Kauai, Hawaii, raised his family, died and was buried there.

Nancy, this is so strange!!  I am a Mayo descendant.....and just a week or two ago I came across a match on Ancestry of someone from Hawaii.  I don't remember the surnames associated with it but I thought it was absolutely crazy because I had no known relatives there.  Does your husband have a GEDMatch or Ancestry? I'd love to compare to him.  Feel free to send it to me privately!

Not a match.  Not even at a minimum of 1 cM.  I'm going to go look in my ancestry tree and see if I can find who that person was...maybe they are related to him?  Who knows?

Hi Nancy, 

In my research today I found that William Mayo, one of the first to emigrate here to the USA, was twice married, both to ladies from Barbados.  Now, I don't know much about that country, but I think there are Spanish roots to that???

This is from Wikipedia about Barbados: William could have been one of those early settlers?!
