name denotes his mother,grandmother,or someone notable in his past.

most likely his father surname.)One Family tree has father John Mann

I just know his name was Stephen Van Rensselear Mann and yes those are his birthday and death dates.  John Mann and Sally Lathrop sounds right but now I can't find Johns parents.  These would be my 3rd, 4th n 5th grandparents.  Im trying g to find out where my family originates from.
