Those dead men have the same mtDNA as the test taker(s) in that direct maternal line.  A dead man's sister or maternal aunt could have living direct maternal line descendants. mtDNA matching of distant direct maternal line cousins confirms the accuracy of those direct maternal lines from the testers back to their most recent direct maternal line ancestor.

But Henry won't be on anybody's direct maternal line, even if his sister is.  I'm not asking why the flags are on his (hypothetical) sister.
It is a simple way to know which direct maternal line Henry Fairfax belongs to.

Similar for http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Romanov-29

and

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Roberts-7102

The latter provides confidence that his direct maternal line is accurate back to the most recent direct maternal line ancestor http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Archer-1069 of his direct maternal line cousins http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sawyer-1305 and http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Higgs-574 who are a sufficient mtDNA match to each other.

All children inherit mtDNA from their mother. Henry Fairfax would have the same mtDNA as Mary (Cholmondeley) Fairfax.

So basically it says we can confirm Henry's maternal ancestry by getting him to take an mtDNA test, so long as it turns out to match Michael Ibsen etc.

Anybody know a good medium, so we can ask him to send a sample over from the Other Side?
I did not need a medium to learn my father's mtDNA (I mtDNA tested his sister) or his father's mtDNA (I tested two of his direct maternal line relatives).

If you are suggesting there is a chance Henry was switched at birth then I would add that was exceedingly rare prior to hospital births (and it also rarely happens in hospitals).
So what are we waiting for?  Henry's sister died at 2, but his mother's sister is already Confirmed, in the Ibsen trail.  We've already got all the test data we're going to get.  Shall we mark Henry as Confirmed or what?
You get your mtDNA from your mother only. I did not imply anything about switching anyone.

It is useful for the people that have Henry Fairfax as an ancestor. They can compare their test result with other test takers in this line to confirm they are related.
