Do You have "Sources" for an ancestor named William Stone born before 1800?

When I was a kid we would connect the dots to make a picture.  If you connected incorrectly you saw something unrecognizable, and didn't fit into any picture.   If you connected correctly you received a clear picture ready to color.  The Stone Name Study wants to connect the dots and make clear connected profile pictures, that connect to other pictures.  WE want to color them in with as much detail as possible.

We are starting with some of the more common first names for the Stone line.  Currently that name is William.

The Stone Name Study is looking for any and all resources, sources and any family information for ancestors named William Stone born before 1800.   On WikiTree alone we have identified 313 William Stone profiles, about 85 of these profiles William Stone's were born before 1800.

We want to verify information and connect each  to their Correct Stone Lines backed by sources that can be viewed by anyone without having to purchase a membership elsewhere to view them.

If you have a William Stone born before 1800 in your family tree and would like to share your information and sources please contact http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Stone_Name_Study Stone Name Study and enter your public comment or respond to G2G question.

We are waiting to hear from you,

Respectfully,

Cheryl Stone Caudill

I have a William Stone (England) b. 1608 d.1683 that appeared as a DNA match  on my Family Tree DNA. No other specifics yet.
Not sure I can't find one NOT ONE stone ancestor that I can say I'm related too here on wikitree it's kind of odd but I feel defeated

Hi Ross,

My first question would be where did you come across this William Stone? Aside from the children listed in the profile on WikiTree, which is missing the spouse Mary Donall, you mention in your G2G answer, There is no ancestor or descendant trail to obtain any leads.

Looking into this William's profile I see where you created it on May 17, 2016, but where did you get this information.  This would be a start in researching your William Stone.

Thanks Ros,

The Stone One Name Study is in the process of taking on one common first name, William is the first and trying to connect and /or find out as much as possible about them.

As stated above we have 313 William Stone's alone on WikiTree.

Shirley,

Do you have the date of the William Stone's birth and/or death?  My Stone family is from around Fayette County, Ky and many still live there.

Ancestors came out of Virginia.

Just trying to sort out the William Stone's.  Thanks, I am going to add tis information to the Stone One Name Study in our odd's and ends section.

Cheryl
Only an estimated birth date of 1733; no documentation other than what I posted here. Appears to be the father of William H Stone, born c 1753 and died Feb 1825 in Fayette, KY. He is on 1810 & 1820 census in Fayette, KY.

Does WikiTree already have a profile for this William Stone?  If so could you add the Will information to this profile?

I've been working on William S. Stone, b. c. 1725 in Stratford, Virginia, son of Thomas and Katherine (Broughton) Stone, married Hannah Conway and died at Caraway Creek, Randolph, North Carolina.  He has a son William, born about 1751 in Prince William Virginia and died in Surry County, North Carolina.:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Stone-9728

Apparently, there's a book, "The Chronicle of Thomas Stone of Hamilton Parish in Colonial Virginia", that tells of the William who married Hannah Conway but I can find only secondary sources for it.

There is also:  The Stones of Poynton Manor, A Genealogical History of Captain William Stone, etc.: https://catalog.hathitrust.org/Record/005763794

I've also found:  Genealogy of the Stone family originating in Rhode Island:  https://archive.org/details/genealogyofstone00ston

And there's "Stone connections : a more complete genealogy of the Stone family" but it's not on-line yet.  Just snippets at Hathitrust.

Posted on the Name study page as well:

I'm descended from Adolphous "Dolphous" Stone, 1828–1870, Lincoln County, Tennessee

I'm in a disagreement with Beverly on his parentage, and am looking for more data. I posit he is the child of Nancy Franklin of Burke, NC and William N. Stone Jr., whom I have as 1792–1829, born Franklin County, North Carolina and died in Franklin County, Tennessee, USA

1810 Census, Franklin Co., NC has 1 male aged 16-25 named William N Stone, and 1 female aged 26-44. This meshes with a young son (I have the Jr. as 18 at this point) and his mother (my hunch is Elizabether Miller, who would be 33). I believe the absent father to be (Pvt.) William Nichols Stone 1763–1856, born Halifax, Halifax, North Carolina, died Rusk, Texas

1820 Census (Aug 7 1820), Burke, North Carolina (where Nancy Franklin was born). listed under name William Stone (no middle initial) has the correct number of ages and noses for wife Nancy, and children William, Sarah Ann, George

Tracing the nose counts, we both have a very compelling trail for all the kids and Nancy to move west, and a solid trail thereafter. 1830 Census, in Franklin, TN, listed under name Nancy Stone, and it has the correct number/ages for all 6 kids, including no adult males (I have William having died in 1829). We can follow the Widow Stone to a possible Brother-in law's home, and then with her daughter near the end of her life.

Beverly contends that a DNA expert has disproven the relationship of this William Stone as being a father of Dolphous and company, however I do not have the details on the disparity.

What I do have is in Ancestry Thrulines (so *matched* DNA to "reported" parentage), for:

Pvt. William Nichols Stone, 21 matches, 15 to my posited William N Stone, Jr., 5 to Lemuel, and 3 to a heretofore unknown brother of theirs, John.

Elizabeth Miller, 14 matches, all with no husband identified, for 3 siblings, Elizabeth C, Stone, George W. Stone and Charles Miller Stone

Pvt. John Edward Franklin, 32 matches to every manner of Nancy Franklin's siblings, along with Nancy

Mary Polly Irwin (same 32 matches)

If anyone is part of those matches, or knows anything of these branches, I'm looking to find what other connections I can.

by Matthew Kelty G2G1 (1.0k points)

Almost forgot, 2 properties away on that 1810 Census in Franklin NC, is a Johnathan Stone, listed as 45+, one wife 45+, 3 daughters between 10-25, and two sons, one under 10, one 14-25

I think this is John William "Bean" Stone, also a son of (Capt.) John William Stone Sr. 1730-1797, and brother of my (Pvt.) William Nichols Stone

Matthew,

You asked if anyone else is interested in the Stone profiles you refer to. The answer is “yes”, there are a number of us with male Stone relatives participating in the FTDNA Stone DNA Surname Project: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/stone/about/results

You’ll find most of us and our contacts in the Group #11 (R1b1a2  Hap’group-  H) and you’ll find our results in this yDNA Colorized Chart: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/stone?iframe=ycolorized

At this time we have 5 test takers in our group who can trace their Stone ancestry back to “the immigrant” John Stone-1277 and his wife Mary O’Brissell-3.

I find your suggestion that a son of William Stone (1763-1856) might be the husband of Nancy Franklin-8444, to be very interesting. There's a profile for the father here on WikiTree: William Stone-17008, and his son Lemuel-17007. We have two matching men in the group who can trace their Stone line back to William Stone-17008. They indicated when they joined the Stone surname project that William had two other sons (besides Lemuel) and four daughters, names unknown.

Thank you so much, I have joined the Project, however I will only have mtDNA to compare, as my Y will be tied to Kelty, not Stone. If the participant in R1b1a2 Hap'group - H, kit 29332 and I were to compare notes, their George Washington Stone b 1812 is either a sibling (my guess) or an uncle (if we factor in the 16 year age difference) of my Dolphous Stone b 1828. Currently, my ancestry.com has them both listed as sons of William N. Stone Jr, 1792–1829, husband of Nancy Franklin, and William N. Stone Jr as a sibling of Lemuel and son of Pvt. William Nichols Stone b 1763, and I think married to Elizabeth Miller 1777-1854. Feel free to kick the tires on this, and share your thoughts: https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/56834832/person/342488728018

And if you know how we can better explore the DNA, please, teach me.  My FamilyTree Big-700 is being processed, so it may be a few weeks before I get that data.

Matthew, It’s good that you joined the Stone surname project. But I’m afraid that your mtDNA is not going to be of any help sorting out your great grandmother Alma Mary Stone’s line. You inherited your mtDNA from your mother, and she from her mother, etc. going back to your Earliest Known Ancestor on your direct female line, Elizabeth Morgan from Wales.

That’s good that you’re working on your Big-700 test, but I hope you realize that it has absolutely nothing to do with your great grandmother Stone’s ancestors. It will only give you information about your direct male Kelty line.

Your original post indicates that you are using your Ancestry ThruLines suggestions to support your candidate for the husband of Nancy Franklin-8444 and father of your ancestor Dolphous Stone-26702 and his brother George W. Stone-24875. But you refer to matches with “Pvt. John Edward Franklin” and “Mary Polly Irwin”, Nancy Franklin’s parents. If Ancestry ThruLines are accurate, those matches would only confirm your relationship to Nancy Franklin, but do not provide any useful information about who was her husband.

You refer to matches with “Elizabeth Miller” and her children. I believe this is Elizabeth Miller-2758, who was married to Rowland Stone, a man born in Ireland in 1769 who cannot possibly be the male Stone connection to any of the Stone men in our group, because they are all descended from John Stone-1277 who came to Virginia from England about 1700. Elizabeth Miller and Rowland Stone had a son George Washington Stone-15496 who was born in 1815. I am aware that on many Ancestry trees (and even on Find A Grave) that many people have conflated their son with Nancy Franklin’s son, George Washington Stone-24875, causing multiple incorrect Ancestry trees. I’m afraid that “contamination” may have caused totally inappropriate Ancestry ThruLines matches for you and others as well. When I started working on these Stone lines on WikiTree, one of the first things I had to do was to sort out these two different men named George Washington Stone who had been conflated on WikiTree as well.

Let’s continue to work on this together. I have some ideas of other records I can check, and I’ll do that. This particular G2G post that we’re using for this discussion is a very old one, going back to 2016, and may not be noticed by others who are currently interested in which male Stone was the husband of Nancy Franklin-8444. I see that there is another, more recent, G2G discussion connected with her here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1585293/looking-spouse-nancy-franklin-profile-franklin-8444-burke

I recommend that we continue our discussion there. Is that okay with you? If yes, I’ll add a link on that discussion, so that the two are tied together.

My Stone for that time period was born in 1802, possibly in New Hampshire.  He is my roadblock.  He died in Little Falls, New Brunswick Canada Sep 27, 1864.  His wife Sarah Ann (Royal) Stone then returned to Dover Foxcroft, Maine with their children.  I also can't determine what happened to two of the sons, Frank E. B. Stone (b 1854 Canada) and William Stone (b 1848 Canada).  Benjamin's birth was confirmed in a government document where Sarah was trying to get a pension from the US government for Ben Jr who died in the Civil War and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
