Correcting LNAB

Question

When I attempt to correct Davol-7 so that the profile can be merged with Devol-11, I receive a message indicating that I cannot make the change.  The profile was orphaned, so I adopted it.  There are so many variations in the spelling of this surname and the information on the two profiles is a match.  Could someone please help me?

If either of the two spellings is correct

-- don't change an lnab before merging

-- don't change an lnab after merging

-- just merge the wrong one into the right one

If both spellings are wrong

-- change one not both before merging

-- merge the other one into that one.

I tried to change the variation "Davol" but received a message that I could NOT change the LNAB on profile Davol-7.  This surname has evolved through history.  My understanding is that the family were originally Huguenots and I believe the name may have been Duell.  Through the years it has been Davol, DaVol, Davoll, Devol, DeVol, and several other variations.  However, the father of Davol-7 is listed with the LNAB Devol, so my thought is that he should be listed as Devol aka Davol. My interest in this family stems from the fact that I'm related to all of them...Joseph Davoll (Davoll-1) and Mary Soule are my 7x great grandparents through both lines.  Sarah Sisson who married William Davol-42 is the sister to my 7x great grandfather James Sisson.  William Davol-42 is a distant uncle because he's the son of Jonathan Davol, Sr (Davol-31). And Jonathan Devol-46 is my 2nd cousin, 9x removed.  I also have a 3rd cousin in the DeVol family and haven't had an opportunity to trace her family yet...  Any help with all of this would be appreciated!
