Translation of "Wachtkassengeldeinnehmer"

What's the best translation for "Wachtkassengeldeinnehmer"? An eighteenth-century ancestor had this position; was it something more than managing funds for the municipal guard, as its component parts suggest? LEO, Duden, and Mackensen are no clear help. Thanks!

Vielen Dank, Helmut!

My guess was close ("in charge of funds for the municipal guard"); I'll tweak the bio to follow your translation... thanks again!

I can't find anymore than you already seem to have. For example, from Muret-Sanders (1905):

  • einnehmenen: to take (in), to recieve
  • kassen: Cash
  • kassengeld: current money
  • kasseneinnehmer: reciever, collector
  • geldeinnehmer: receiver of money, money-taker, cashier

In context of "Wacht~" my inference would be the job was less "accountant" and more "collections officer" - i.e. collecting fees and fines and selling seized property, rather than "managing funds.

or what Helmut already gave while I was reading/typing my answer :)
I'm somewhere close to 80-90% fluent in German, so I'd divvied up the German jawbreaker much like you did (wondering also whether there might be a connection to "Einnahme", or "income").

Helmut seems to have nailed it quite nicely... and perfectionist and writer me, I'm trying to find something even smoother than his succinct translation. So I like your "collections officer" even more than "collector", since it underscores that geldeinnehmen refers to an actual profession, and not just a job/task.

So thanks, Rob (and wiedermal Dank, Namensvetter Helmut)... cheers!
