Duplicate Profiles

I've only been using this site for about 2 weeks and I was given to understand that duplicates were to be avoided, yet I have found dozens of instances where I want to put in names for example Marie Catherine and there is already a Catherine Marie or just Catherine all with the same surname , the same with Jean Baptiste some just put in Jean, then there are those that put in a "dit" name and those that don't, which results in more  duplicates. I stopped using "dit" names years ago because it was very hard to trace individuals who had a dit name but never used it when signing documents.

I've come across many instances where there is a profile of someone with a spouse but no children, but in my data base there are about a dozen children.

Should I stop putting info in or continue creating profiles that are probably duplicates.

I wouldn't worry about the ones with children in one profile and not in another.  Everyone has to stop somewhere when entering in a family.  But you should do careful study to see if the duplicates are actually duplicates or just similar.  Ideally you will find sources which will allow you to separate out the real duplicates to allow them to be merged and to show that the non-duplicates are not the same by the sources you find.  But you don't need to do everything at once or by yourself.  Fill free to post questions about potential matches on G2G, giving as much information as you can and giving a link (e.g. the WikiTree ID of them.  If you can't find sources for one or more of them ask for help.  We have several people here who are very good at finding sources.
