His name was listed as John D. Cox in his will dated March1, 1854, Book 4, page 183.  His wife's name was listed as Frances D. Cox, and later in estate papers as Frances S. Cox.  Francis Jervis (Jarvis) my late husband's ancestor was surety on will.  John's brothers were listed as Caleb, David, and Jackson.

In 1850 John D. Cox was 39 and Frances was 44 years old,

In the 1880 US Federal Census, Frances Cox was living in Butts Road District, Norfolk County, VA, and Caleb Cox was listed as her cousin, and  the two Jarvis men were listed as her nephews.

They were sons of Francis A. Jarvis.  I wonder if Frances and John may have been cousins who married, and what relationship Frances Cox and Francis Jarvis were.  Thank you for your help with this.

There are four John Coxes in this story...

John Cox, Sr of Moyock was born to my ancestor Captain Thomas R Cox (NC Militia) in 1777.  John had two wives - Ann, his first; followed by Lydia.  Ann was probably the mother of Frances (b 1806) and John Jr. (of whom little is known).  John Sr became a wealthy plantation owner with 2200 acres west of Moyock.  I've been told that in the early 1800s, there was still an Algonquin village inside the treeline on the west end, bordering the Dismal Swamp.

In May 1848, the will of Abigail Halstead Cox Sears attests that John D Cox was her son (b 1811 in Moyock), Though she was married to Caleb Cox (d 1813), my father felt that John D was the illegitimate son of Edward Cox.  John D was the half brother of John Lattimore Cox, who was fathered by Caleb.  John D also had a sister, Sabrina.  John D lived with John Cox Sr.

John D and Frances were married in the 1830s, and they were cousins.  They did not have any children as of the 1850 census.

Named after John Sr - the planter, my brother, today, COL John A. Cox, USA(ret.) carries on the name.   I'm CDR William J. Cox, USNR(ret.).  Our father, William J. Cox Jr., wrote "The Coxes of Currituck NC Pioneers Patriots Planters," and its available from the Currituck Library's Geneology collection.
