The 1860 Census lists Joseph Marley as being 17 at the time. Of course, record keeping wasn't perfect back then, so it is possible that he was born in 1846 instead of 1843. He was already working as a farm laborer at the time of that census, before the move to Texas. Also, the Find A Grave site lists father as John Marley, who died in 1895. The 1880 Federal Census shows a John Marley, wife Betsy and living with them a Richard Marley (31) and an Amanda Marley (41). I'm not sure this Joseph is the same, as his mother Elizabeth would have been married to Solomon Carter at this time. Thanks, though, for reminding me what a great resource findagrave.com can be!
