Occasional glitch for new volunteers

+14 votes
As a greeter, I receive about 1-2 emails per week from guests who attempt to volunteer as new members, but regardless of what they try in entering their tags, the system will not accept them.

I apologize for the glitch and confirm their membership without tags, but I wonder how many potential WikiTree members give up rather than sending a private message reporting the problem to their greeter.

Should each of these cases be reported to info@WikiTree.com? How should greeters handle the problem? Thanks!

Carole --

It would be really great if we could get screenshots from someone this is happening to. Could you coach them through doing that?

Depends on the person. I'll give it a try.

I wonder if that was the real issue with the person who couldn't volunteer with the iPad?
Sounds good ... we'll just wait patiently now. :-)

Oh! Could you post a note to the Greeters asking them to watch for this? I'm going to be out until this afternoon/evening.

Thank you!!

Thank you, Carol, for reporting this. It is certainly worrisome.

Maybe you could ask them what sort of computer and web browser they are using? We need to try to find the pattern.

Thanks again!

Thanks for looking at this, Chris.

I've just sent emails to a couple of people who reported the problem recently, asking them to let me know what computer and browser they were using.

I also posted a message in the Greeters' Google Group per Julie's request, so other greeters can be on the lookout.

I have only been a Greeter for 2 months, so I don't have as much history of volunteering issues as the rest of the fantastic Greeter team. The 2 biggest problems I have seen is email confirmation and as Carole has said, Tag issues. The email issues are usually that the link isn't clickable or it leads to a blank page. Both of which is usually solved by copy/paste or adjusting email/browser settings.

The Tag issues I have encountered are as Carole has said with the system not accepting the entries, people being confused as to the essence of the tag and also language translations. Tag in English equates to label in this sense but in German it means Day, and I have been asked on 2 or 3 occassions if a date needs to be put in and if so whether it is an ancestral date or todays date. Although technically it shouldn't stop people volunteering, it makes for frustration and puts people off joining.

I will ask for further information in future.
