I am a decendent of the Mc Carty clan. Is Mitchell from Scotland?

Hi Judie.  See http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/McCarty  The name McCarty has its origins in Ireland and not Scotland.   See http://www.surnamedb.com/Surname/Mitchell for the surname Mitchell.

I'm not sure I agree.  McCarty is certainly of Irish origin but just plain "Carty" appears to be Scot.  I've been researching this family for 20 years.  The old timers in my family always said we were not Irish, we were Scots, and I have come to agree with them.  A cousin's DNA is also pointing in that direction.  We plan to speak with some matches in Scotland next spring.
