Everyday I discover numerous bios in need of cleanup after a merger.

Buts its impossible to tackle them each time.  What is the right category to put them into. Here is an example of one. I have it on my list to go back to but could we assign it a category? Which one is correct?

I volunteer as a ranger and find significantly less the 50% of the people do any cleanup as I watch the feed of merges that are being done during my shift.

I have to remind myself there are many different levels of engagement with WikiTree. When people that are nominally or occasionally active complete merges without bio cleanup, they do help move the WikiTree forward, just not as far as one might like. I can live with that.

I do try to clean up the ones the one I stumble across in general, and when rangering, specifically, though.

I am also doing some Ranger work and I agree that we have different engagement but also different skill levels.

Everyone can be part of WikiTree and everyone has a family history the skills level differ a lot ==>

  1. We have enormous difference in skill levels
    1. Genealogy skills.
Some specialist on GPS and some people doing the first time building a family tree
    2. Wiki skills i.e. using Wiki formatting
    3. Web skills. Some people are web designers other has never been writing on internet
    4. Delivering IT solutions. You have people like Aleš who deliver daily something and some people who don't understand what user requirements or user stories are
    5. Academic background of writing/documenting research
    6. Language skills
You have people like me who dont have english as mother tongue.....

  2. We lack good way of communicating like IRL meetings or using web hangouts

Query site:www.wikitree.com auto-generated by a GEDCOM import

says we have 1 200 000 profiles that needs cleaning

But, surely, that category is only when GEDCOM cleanup is required.  What about when there is no GEDCOM cruft, merely two of everything after a merge?  (BTW, I find it very difficult to 'thank' a person who has completed a merge, if they haven't cleaned up after themselves.)

If you click on the Category above you will see the Category:Maintenance_Categories and find more options....

But still no 'duplicated text' category :(

And these are just some of the 73 maintenance categories...

Long bios in need of cleanup is probably the best category for the situation asked about in this thread.

Elizabeth, I do not believe that there is a category for this problem yet. Some are afraid to clean up after a merge. If I am unsure about any information in the biography section I will at least try to make sure that there is only one heading for each section and that they are in a somewhat logical order from oldest to newest and place the information in the appropriate section eliminating duplicate information. That requires no special knowledge or even research and at the very least makes the profile easier to read and follow for others who may want to do more work.

I try and put them in a more-or-less timeline.  Something that really annoys me is when there are sections Birth-Death-Marriage and then Birth-Death-Marriage all over again.  Don't people realise that a person gets married BEFORE they die? ;)

I always clean up with the exception of once last week when the two bios were obviously duplicates of each other originally but one had been slightly modified. No problem normally but in this case they were both as long as toilet rolls, so I refused to touch it. I let the two managers sort that one out as it's their fault.

There is no category specifically for this. If it's not overly long and looks like two gedcoms merged put it in Category: Gedcom cleanup required

If it's a long or even medium bio, put it in Category: Long Profiles in Need of Cleanup

What I see more often after a merge is duplicate or triplicate siblings or children and I have no way of knowing which is correct.  I usually just send a private message to the profile managers and remind them of the situation and that they really need to address it.
Anne,

Since you oversee the profile improvement project you are the best person to answer this.  However, do you see any value in creating a category for this instead of lumping them into Gedcom cleanup required (there are so many of these)?  a merged profile by not need cleanup from an import.  I think this is another problem.  Perhaps breaking it down into another category may work.  Merged cleanup required??
I've really tried to keep the maintenance categories to a minimum, not that you can tell that from looking at the page (the categorization project got carried away).  I have the feeling that if you create one, someone comes along and fills it up.

And they pretty generally fit into one of the two categories mentioned. If they're just a couple of merged gedcoms, they need gedcom cleanup. When I find one in the "long Profiles" category, I do a happy dance, because in comparison to some of the others in the category, they are easy.
