Is There a Problem with Search Results?

When I do a bare search for Wilmot Moore (no dates or places), I get the "match" of Vivienne W. (Quinn) Murray.  Yes, the Soundex for the last name is the same and Vivienne has W. as her middle initial, but they really aren't at all similar.  Is this a correct "match" in the system?

Note that private profiles in search results can cause confusion because middle names are included in matching but can't be revealed in the search results.
Thanks. That hadn't occurred to me.

Well, why not? If you don't have decent guesses to put in, what can you expect?  Are you just trying to find a source for an unconnected GEDMOD refugee?  If so, you might want to see if you can find other Moores who were entered on the same date (i.e. from the same GEDMOD) and see if you can try a few searches with guessed dates and placed based on them.

No, I do have more info, but I was taught that when you start to search, you put in as little as possible, then you narrow your search.

I was surprised at how far apart the two were and wondered if there was a problem or if it was normal.
The new system WT uses now takes the synonym definitions from another site and it is too broad for my taste.  It should find More for Moore, and Murray for Maury perhaps, but not Murray for Moore.
Apparently somebody at WeRelate got a big list of all the surnames on Ancestry (not all real), and clustered them automatically by Soundex or similar, and put the list out so that users could manually delink the ones that shouldn't be linked.  But that process hasn't got very far yet.

Easier said than done.  Really it needs a country code.  When I looked at it, I didn't bother getting a username, because although I would have unlinked names in an English context, I wasn't going to say they were never linked in America.

Actually the database dump could be used to generate a name list.. Just go up and down the male lines.  So, if you search for Murray you get everything that's vertically linked with any Murray.
