August 2016 Biography Builders: Awesome August Ancestor Annals

We had a very nice second month building biographies. As a group we built 60 new biographies (three times as many as last month.)  Great job. Thank you all.

If you didn't get a hint from the question title. This month we're going to feature surnames that begin with the letter "A". (Andersons, Adams etc.) These can be from anywhere across WikiTree, not just your own watchlist. Offer some random kindness and deck out a profile for someone. Or improve an orphan somewhere. Places to look for likely candidates: America's founding fathers and "needs narrative/bio". These will have minimum sourcing but will need further research to create good biographies.

See the first month's thread for how to participate, and last month's thread

Here are the details:

It is easy to get in a groove creating profiles, tracing ancestries, adding sources, and making connections on WikiTree, and in that groove, forget to build a profile to its fullest. Many profiles on WikiTree, even from our best members, have sources but no substance-what do those sources tell us? What has your research revealed? Who was this person? That's what the biography section is for and this Biography Builders challenge is a personal growth challenge to encourage members to create biographies for the profiles they work on, not just find connections and sources.

500px-Biography_Builders-1.jpgEach month, we'll set a theme to the challenge, asking participants to create biographies for different people in their family tree or from certain projects and categories.

Those who participate can challenge themselves to do a little more on each profile by working through our checklist of what makes a profile "complete." We know no person will ever be completely researched, and so no profile will ever be completely done, but there are certain points in building a profile where you hit logical stopping points and can "call it" at least for awhile. Each time you do this, you can share that profile in that month's thread as an example for the community as well as have a chance to get thoughtful feedback on other things that might make nice additions.

Each time you hit a milestone in your participation you'll get a template for your profile to show others you've been making WikiTree a better place to share family history. The first template is placed when you've completed 10 profiles for Bio-Builder challenges. The numbers are cumulative, so it could be the first month you participate that you hit that mark, or it could be 5 months later. It's up to you. Just number your profiles as you go and put them in the Builders thread.

Here's our ideas for what to put on your profile:

Data Section:
birth date/place
names of parents
marriage date/place and spouse name
death date/place

Biography Section

  • Written sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • As a general rule, biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (i.e. Disputed persons sections, Research Notes, Disambiguation, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (If you own the copyright or if they are in the public domain).
  • Categories/Project templates.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • Search and initiate/complete merges with duplicates
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources, cited inline.

Places you might look for information: Family Search; Find-a-grave; Gengophers.com; google search for the person and their spouse together; look for a genealogy on the family; check for a town or county history to see if the person is mentioned; from the profile ID drop down menu use "Research"; if you have subscriptions to pay sites check those; check for printed ancient town records in the place where the subject lived. Of course if they are related to you, you may have even better information, like birth, death, probate, land, bible records etc.

Have questions? Post them here as a comment.

This challenge will run until mid September.

Thanks for getting it started, Anne! I was swamped last go 'round. Hopefully, I'll get a couple in this month.
Hello I am Peter Curtis.

Curtis-4307

I would like to volunteer for this project. It would be an honour to take part in writing biographies especially the ones adopted files.
Look forward to reading your biographies, Peter!

When you're done with your first "A" bio, start an answer not a comment. Put the URL for the profile in the answer. Then as you want to add more to the list, you can edit your answer.

Thank you. The more bios that wikitree gets the better it will be.

I've been doing a fair amount of upgrading profiles, but not yet to where I'd feel comfortable having people look at them for inspiration on how to make their own profiles look.

The one thing I'm not quite sure about in Biography Builders is how close to your sample, say, would be suitable for a stopping point on a given profile.  Another thing is how the judging of profiles is done if at all.  I expect looking at a profile's changes list could be done, or is it just self-reporting?
by Dave Dardinger G2G6 Pilot (442k points)
Self reporting, no judging, although I have taken a look at most of the bios from last month, but it wasn't as a judge, just for my own interest (to see what other folks are doing, and I was able to give a hint about doing ref name statements.

I figure if I've looked everywhere I can look from my office chair, then I've covered a person, for the moment. So I'd check Family Search; Gengophers.com, do a google search for the person and their spouse together; look for a genealogy on the family; check for a town or county  history to see if the person is mentioned; I also have several subscriptions, all of which I check; if doing Mass. and Conn. I check for ancient town records. It's going to vary from place to place and time to time.
No reason to feel that way! Everyone has to start somewhere. I have looked at a few of the profiles you have recently done. There's even some "A" profiles. You do nice work. I noticed that you haven't found good links for your Ancestry sources. I found it easy to get sources from Family Search by searching the actual names listed on the census records. You've have a good start on Daisy:
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Albery-46

You can tweak that profile a bit more and have an even nicer biography.
That sounds really good I just volunteered today.

I like your comments I would be the same I think.

Peter

Anne, could some parts of this phrasing be added the the BioBuilders monthly heading template. I've come back to it several times to see what you recommended as I'm working on bios. I had been using the RootsSearch tool which picks up quite a few of these but others were things I'd never thought of.

Do you mean the question part at the top of this page?

And does this sound right.

Yes, in the question part of the post. I assumed it was boilerplate wording that you copy from month to month. The phrasing sounds good.
Excellent idea Debi, and it is now part of the standard post.

(1-10 last month)

1. George Avery (1814-1878): shipwright, ship's carpenter - and then a pub landlord!
2. Marcus Alabone (1873-1937): physician and surgeon, living in the 'posh' part of London, and serving in World War One.
3. Selina (Allen) Murch (1850-1918): Bristol, Gloucestershire, England mother of 13 children. Connected to her surrounding family, but not the 'big ole tree'! Can you help?
4. Ann (Aysh) Caseley (1750-1845): lived to be 95 years old
5. Emma (Adams) Edgecombe (1852-1920): had ten children
6. William Angell (1797-1877): a basic bio turned into a research query about a 'conjectural person'
7. Louisa (Arthurs) Ball (1848-1901): lived in Plymouth as a lodging-house keeper after her husband died

It's all in the timezones... *cracks knuckles*
"chuckles"- I have my sister visiting, and it's been all I can do to keep up with the email. I have a half done J from the last challenge.
at least you participated in the last one Anne...i totally flaked.
Thanks for the template! A thing of beauty!  One question; when we have written more than 10 bios, do we get a different one?
Yeah I really like the template. I think we have a 50 then 100 and increments of 100 after that. They all look the same but with different quantities and we might play with different colors for the bigger ones.

1. William Danson Anderson (b. 1830 Quebec, d. 1887 Chew Magna, Somerset, England) was a commander with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company. William spent so much time at sea that his first wife is proving difficult to track through censuses, but as of this morning I thought he was his brother, who was also William, so progress is being made!

Yep, you might as well. Who's the third child? I ask because someone the first month wanted to know why we thought it was a good idea to include a list of children.
In his book, Lemuel Abbott lists a son Abraham, a son Samuel with no dates, and an unnamed daughter. The records for the stated place of birth for son Abraham are not published. I'll check family search and ancestry.
Does Edward Brooks 'count' - since we are doing surnames beginning with A this time?
No Edward Brooks doesn't count for this challenge.
Oops, my bad.
I did one wrong last month and had to take it off my list.

5. Nancy Virginia (Austin) Purser - I cleaned up my gedcom import on this one right after I became a WikiTreer. This month's challenge was a good opportunity to revisit it and practice some of what I've learned. It was also an opportunity to collaborate and encourage a distant cousin to come back to genealogy. Sources moved inline; more sources added; bio written; sourced profiles for mother, father, and a daughter added; links to all existing profiles.

Trying the August Challenge with my grandmother's step-mother.  Mary Matilda Arrowood.   http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Arrowood-269.  First one I've really put some time on.   But it was all worth it when I found more information on her parents!!

Found some of Mary's siblings while doing the research for her, but there is very little information that I can find using my resources.  These profiles will have to do until I can get access to more information.
